Department of Curriculum and Instruction

Overview

The Department of Curriculum and Instruction is one of the largest departments at the College of Education, including not only the academic faculty but also the support staff, assistants, administrative, and technical team. The department offers a range of mandatory and elective courses, totaling 65 courses within the graduation requirements for several scientific and literary specialized programs. Additionally, the department teaches graduate-level courses for master's programs and contributes to the preparation and qualification of teachers to keep pace with contemporary developments. To align with Kuwait University’s directions, the department organizes various events each semester, including educational exhibitions, workshops, and training sessions held within the college, the university, and the community, with faculty members leading these activities. The department also supports the community and its institutions by organizing programs, providing consultations, and collaborating with relevant entities to address problems, overcome challenges, develop plans, and evaluate and improve them.
The faculty members are involved in producing books through authorship and translation, as well as preparing research and studies published in top peer-reviewed journals. The department participates in scientific conferences, supervises research peer review, and actively engages in developing curricula in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, providing educational consultations, and participating in various seminars and lectures in public schools. Faculty members are also actively involved in various college and university committees that organize work and develop future frameworks to achieve the college’s vision and mission, such as the Academic Committee, Library Committee, Research Committee, Appointments Committee, Scholarships Committee, Budget Committee, etc.

The department aims to prepare teachers who possess all the qualities of an outstanding educational professional, ensuring that they meet global quality standards in their preparation.
 

Mission

To prepare teachers in various fields of general education (and special needs education) who possess all the necessary competencies for effective teaching, including academic (knowledge-based), skill-based, emotional, professional, and evaluative competencies, in line with the strategy of the Kuwaiti Ministry of Education.

Objectives

In light of Kuwait's aspirations for comprehensive development and the country's continuous efforts towards national progress and citizen welfare, and within the general philosophy of the State of Kuwait and its expectations of the university's role, especially in general education, the Department of Curriculum and Instruction aims to:
1. Collaborate with Other University Departments: Assist in preparing high school graduates and those with equivalent qualifications for the teaching profession in pre-university stages according to the educational ladder in Kuwait.
2. Provide Comprehensive Teacher Preparation: Offer courses that aim to prepare teachers comprehensively in their specialized fields, equipping them with necessary professional competencies.
3. Supervise Teacher Preparation: Oversee the preparation of student teachers in public schools through the college’s specialized Practical Education Center, managed on a rotating basis by its members.
4. Continuously Update Courses: Regularly update courses to keep them aligned with the latest global trends in their field.
5. Introduce New Courses: Continuously work on introducing new courses as deemed necessary by some department members.
6. Future-Oriented Course Delivery: Develop plans to offer courses in an electronic format in the future.
7. Provide a Specialized Library: Maintain a high-quality library in the field of curriculum and instruction, providing faculty members with up-to-date and specialized references.
8. Support the College's Consultation and Training Center: Assist the college’s Consultation and Training Center by participating in training courses, especially those related to curriculum and instruction.
9. Strengthen School-College Links: Enhance connections with public schools by participating in seminars and delivering general lectures.
10. Contribute to Community Service: Support community service through involvement in activities with other institutions in Kuwait, such as the Ministries of Education, Media, Defense, and the Kuwait Foundation for the Advancement of Science, by providing consultations, organizing programs, planning, authoring books, and conducting training courses.
11. Promote Collaboration with Similar Departments: Foster cooperation with similar departments locally, particularly with the Department of Curriculum at the College of Basic Education, to exchange educational experiences.
12. Exchange Expertise Regionally: Engage in communication and consultation with curriculum departments on a Gulf and Arab level.
13. Facilitate Visits: Exchange visits among faculty members with similar departments locally, regionally, and Arab-wide.
14. Support the Master’s Program in Education: Provide faculty members to support the Master's program in Education (Curriculum and Instruction Pathway) offered by the Graduate College at the university.
 

Achievements and Challenges of the Department's Plan During the Academic Year:

1. Updating Course Descriptions: The department has updated course descriptions to ensure they are current and relevant.
2. Participation in Committees: Faculty members have been actively involved in various committees at the department, college, and university levels.
3. Community and Institutional Service: The department has served numerous community centers, educational institutions, media organizations, and cultural entities.
4. Authorship and Research: The department has been engaged in authoring books, preparing studies, and publishing research.
5. Workshops and Conferences: The department has organized workshops and participated in scientific seminars and conferences.
